Flooding ravages campsites and speedway
CAPITAL REGION -- Chris Lawler and his family were camping at Kinyons Canyon Campground off Route 66 in the Town of Nassau.
Lawler said, "When the water really started to rise on the road coming in, that's when we decided to get as much as we could in the car and get out and come back today and tried to clean up."
But there's nothing left to pick up. The campsite his family was staying at was destroyed in the flood.
"The tent is gone now," said Lawler. "The tarp was probably a good 6 foot in the air. Over to the right here was our picnic table, and the picnic table's gone."
Another site that got hit hard was the Lebanon Valley Speedway campgrounds. RVs have water up to the doors, trash cans are completely submerged and unfortunately the speedway looks worse.
All day, racers and fans alike have been stopping by to lend their support and assess the damage.
Ron Gerardi of Lebanon Valley Speedway said, "It's pretty sickening actually. I have quite a bit of money tied up in my hobby racecars out there, my motor home and my cars. I've got my life savings in there so it's quite upsetting. The whole package is really, it's hard to replace."
For now, they're salvaging what they can. All day equipment has been in the water pulling the vehicles out and bringing them to drier land. But all the owners can do is sit by and watch.
Gerardi said, "A lot of cries, a lot of tears, that's what you're hearing. It's just a sad tragedy. We're all suffering together."
